Getting my kit car registered

hey everyone !!! I recently got a 23tbucket kit car! Thing is it's never been registered before and I would like to get on the road ASAP! What's the best way (cheapest way) to get it registered? My stepdad and I built it up, he is no longer capable of driving so it was given to me! We lost all of the bills of sale during a move and like I said it has never been registered before.... Any help would be great! Gone through usual research, but I'm super afraid of having to pay a shit ton of money at the dmv!!!!

Yours will be neither a quick, easy or inexpensive registration. Especially in Cali.

P.S. Lost all receipts in a move ? Might as well tell the DMV your dog ate them.
