I’m getting ready to order some foam to upholster my seats. I’m thinking about getting 3” thick firm or medium/firm for the seat bottom, and 2” medium foam for the seat back. Does that sound about right to you guys?

Some seats use different density foam. Ie: firm with soft over it. It depends on what you like.

G'Day 50x, A foam manufacturer will have details on their website as to the suitability of the different densities required for seating.

2" for the seat back sounds about right. The bottom I think will depend on how you sit in the car and how big you are. I think if you have a longer T body and can distribute your weight between your legs and your butt and you don't weigh all that much 3" would be alright. I have a short T body and sit with my knees higher than a normal sitting position plus more weight than I should have so I tend to sit with more pressure on my butt. I used 5" of firm foam and it works out very well for me. I can hit some pretty hard bumps and not bottom out on the seat.

Cut a hole under the part you sit on and lace it with old seat belts and you can run thinner foam and be down lower in the car.

Yep, I did that. I got my webbing from a truck tie down I grabbed off the side of a freeway.

I just got my foam from thefoamfactory.com. I got my vinyl on sale from JoAnn Fabrics. I’ll post up some pictures when I get done with my homemade seats and side panels.

I ordered my seat foam from thefoamfactory.com I used 3” thick (firm) on the bottom and 2” thick (medium) on the back. I got the vinyl on sale from JoAnn Fabrics. The total materials cost was about $85.

I glued the foam to the plywood, then wrapped the vinyl around it and stapled it from the back. It’s pretty simple looking, but I like it that way. The seat is really comfortable. The bottom cushion just sits in place. The back cushion is attached with two hinges on the bottom. The seat back folds forward to access the storage space behind it.
