And they're going to call this an upgrade

For those of you who are looking to purchase a new computer, I highly and strongly urge you to do it sooner, rather than later. Whilst not being a fan of Windows, I can tell you the move from Windows 7 to Windows 8 will NOT be what any of you will consider to be an UPgrade.

What age category do you fall into? Here are three videos of people of different ages, using Windows 8 for the first time.

Let's start with a 65 year-old.

OK, so it's hard to teach an 'old' dog new tricks, so how about a 45 year-old?

Uh-oh, he wasn't having much luck either, was he? OK, so let's really cut back on the age of the user and try a 12 year-old. Kids can do anything on computers, right?

For the record, this forum member will be avoiding Windows 8 like I would avoid a leper with AIDS.

Me too running XP. Every upgrade??? MS does seems to make things more complicated. Heck, I still wish I had DOS sometimes.

Ex-Pee was one of the better Windows releases, but as things progress, those using it are going to see glaring reasons to move away from it. As the Web evolves, browsers are evolving along with it. And while many Ex-Pee users are going to get by a bit longer with browsers like Firefox and Chrome, the people that insist upon using Internet Explorer are going to be finding more and more Web sites they are having trouble viewing and using. People like RPM are running Firefox, but how many Ex-Pee users are running IE? If they are, IE 8 is the latest version they can run. IE 9 is the current stable release, IE 10 has been available in testing downloads for over a year and IE 10 won't even run on a Vista machine. IE 7 support is shaky and spotty on a lot of current Web software, so how long before IE 8 goes down that same road?

And that's just the Web aspect of the OS. The fact that mainstream support for Ex-Pee ended three years ago this past 14 April is the real problem. Letting Windows 7 computers disappear off the shelves whilst running an Ex-Pee machine is really painting one's self into a very ugly corner. Because Windows 8 really is that ugly. If an Ex-Pee machine takes a powder, what are the options going to be? A Win 8 machine or a $1100 Apple?

If Apple decides to produce an economically-priced machine, they are going to snare a much larger chunk of market share. And I think Linux is going to become much more popular over the next couple years, as well. I'm within a few days of it being 4 months since the last time I booted into Windows for anything other than to edit a MBR to recognize a SolusOS boot partition. I use Windows for absolutely nothing these days.

They are falling into the same stupid ass trap as Blackberry. They are trying to compete with Apple for the "Everything works together" demographic.

So they come out with some stupid ass "Its easy to use and everyone will love it" gimmick. They will release it, and in short order there will be a registry hack to force regular explorer as the desktop.

Sometime you just have to scratch your head in wonder.

I've no problem for people trying to make things work well on hand-helds (phones, tablets, etc.), but let's face the simple fact that most people still use a laptop or desktop for their serious computing. And trying to jam people up with a mobile-based operating sytem on their desktop machines is lunacy.

A year ago, we had a serious clash between a Windows update and the forum software we were using at the time. I spent a considerable amount of time (read: hours), testing the site with various operating systems and multiple browsers and never was able to get to the bottom of it. If that ever happens again, I already have my strategy in place. I will simply be supplying links, like THIS, THIS or THIS. Screw Windows. If Windows doesn't work, then replace it with something that will.

La ti duh... La ti duh... La ti duh. That's corporate America's theme song now. And the rules are, if your fat we don't want you... if you smoke we don't want you, if you have bad credit we don't want you, if you owe money on your student loan we don't want you, if you want to make good money we don't want you and the list goes on. So what ya got here is a bunch a "I was raised to be at the top of the food chain right away" so I can be an idiot types.
