I don't think they had enough clutch in the car to let a gear change tug the motor down. Trying to run an alcohol motor as a high gear only car isn't going to be a very wise decision. I would love to have seen the floater that came out of the clutch, I bet it would have been a hoot.
 
Gerry, here's a Top Alcohol Dragster licensing pass from Frank Hawley's Gainesville school. These aren't killer tune-ups, but certainly quick enough for people to license.

That made me shiver. I remember when i was involved in the BMDRA (British Model drag racing Association, guess who started that one) being asked to pilot a JET Funny car (1/10th scale). This thing would hit 70 in a second.
I stood on the line at Shakespeare raceway with a controller in my hands and he hit the ignition button. 2 Seconds later the armco told the story.
Point is that when i went to walk away I could n,t . Trainers STUCK to the ground. Almost fell over. I also noticed when running the Topo that it was better to wait for the sun before my first pass. STICKY STICKY STICKY.

The right lane at Indy was pretty tricky. It had a really rotten habit of beating us up. After 3-4 years, I finally noticed the secret to that lane. You had to be very careful about where you staged the car. There was a very narrow sweet spot that was not centered in the regular groove. I would generally push the car into the water, turn on the battery and open the air bottle, then I would go stand in front of the car, in case the car ahead of us threw anything back. I would then walk up to the starting line, check for my sweet spot and plant my right foot down where I wanted him to center the car.

Problem was, where I wanted the car centered was right over one of the tire tracks from all the other cars. I planted my foot up there one afternoon, and as Brian pulled through the water, I made to step out of the way. And I pulled my foot right out of my shoe. :blush: I bent over, grabbed my shoe, jammed it on my foot and looked back to the car, only to see Brian with his helmet in his hands. :shrug:
