Belt size

What fan belt are you guys using? Is there a certain car fan belt that will work perfectly or do ya just measure and try to match it up with a belt?

Thanks

Well, if you don't have a number off the old belt you took off, I keep a cloth tape measure in my toolbox for just a occasion. Adjust your alt. to your just under 1/2 your slot, wrap your tape around the pulleys. Don't pull too tight. I usually get 3 belts....the size that measured to, just a touch bigger and just a touch smaller.
OR are you talking about running the belt from the motor pulley straight to the water pump......you know, the ole Jump-On special???? If thats the case, depends on the motor and pulley size......

That's basically the way I did it except I used a piece of 1/2" rope. Just wrapped it around the pulleys and taped the ends together at the proper length. Took it to local NAPA shop and got 3 belts. Counter guy said just take them to try and come back to pay for the one I wanted. When I took the unwanted ones back, I bought a second belt as a backup. Also recorded the size/ no. in my build book.

One thing to bear in mind is automotive V-belts are measured around the outside of the pulleys (circumference length outside) and belt "width" is actually belt "depth", measured from top to bottom. Fractional horsepower belts are measured at the inside of the pulley grooves (circumference length inside) and belt width refers to the top width of the belt..
