Guys
I'm building the rolly stool for my Pontiac 400 so I can move it around while I set up the T. so here is the question. How much pan to ground clearance do you all run? I was going to set the pan on a 6" cinder-block but then decided to make it mobile and now I thought maybe 6" is too tall. Any thoughts? anyone Know the scrub height of a 165/15 tire?
Help!
Thanks!! :tip:

My SBC pan is 4 1/2" up. Scrub height? Rim to ground is 2 1/4" on mine.

What about flywheel cover to ground or trans pan to ground clearence?

On the SBC the flywheel is a little higher the the pan, with the trans pan being about even.

on the Pontiac the bottom of the pan is the low point.

The low point on my T is the oil pan at 3-1/2". :wow: That's why I'm running a Slamguard pan, which has done it's job on numerous occasions...

3 1/2" on mine and I'm running a Slamguard too. I like 'em low.

No real need for too-low of an engine, I think that 6 inches off the ground with the suspension fully bottomed out is a very good height.. If you will notice on those guard pans that the drain plug would turn right off (unscrew them selves) if dragged very much, plus I like my flywheel ring gear in one straight piece, way to easy to mess it up and for nothing useful.. besides the engines look better up a bit more anyway, I will make my new chassis LOW and the engine up out of harms way... Nothing worse than worrying about every dip and speed bump all over town.
But, you do what makes you happy, that is what keeps the welders busy fixing things like this... Drive safe :thumb:

If I ever have a reason to pull my T apart again and weld or cut on the now-painted frame, I will seriously consider raising my motor mounts. 3-1/2" is too low for comfort... I cringe every time I go over a bump, high spot or low spot on the road. As you can see in the pic above, I encountered something pretty sharp and hard somewhere (I don't remember the incident). I would think if I would've had a plain tin pan, I would've had a hole in it!!

Actually there may be a reason for having the engine sit low in the frame. that reason would be interior (foot) room. A T bucket is a mirade of compromises, and in some cases the low engine might be seen as an acceptable compromise. I'm shooting for 4 1/2" pan clearance as a minimum in mine because I'm 6' tall and using a 5 speed trans. I need the flatest floor I can get for foot room.
of course I own another (off topic) car that will litterally hit a beer can on a paved road, so I'm already use to low ground clearance ;).
