Flex steel spray on and fiberglassing

Hey Guys,

Just throwing an idea out there. I thought maybe using floral foam inside of the interior, spraying it with
flex steel and fiberglassing it for a smooth surface. Any thoughts or ideas?

Basically that is what I did except we used a two part foam. Mixing the two together and the pouring it onto the body side while it is laying on its side. After the foam has set I sanded it to the proper shape and thickness before laying down the glass. It makes for a very strong and solid body.

Hey Jim,

Any pictures? Where do you find two part foam?

I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you, Bob, but I had to get hold of my son who is my fiberglass guru. He did say that using the floral foam was not a good idea in your situation because of the curvature of the body. It is fine to use on a perfectly flat surface but it does not take kindly to curves. What we used is a part A and part B Expanding Polyurethane Foam. He can not recall the brand name but suggested that you look it up on line and he HIGHLY recommended that you view the videos on its use. It really expands so a little can go a long way. To give you an example, we mixed and poured it onto the side with the body laying on its side and placed a piece of plywood on top of the foam. On the plywood we placed 600# of sand bags and we both weighed about 150# apiece so we sat on the bags and it raised us and everything else about 2". when it cured we then carved and sanded it to the desired shape and thickness. Then we lay the fiberglass on the foam. I can tell you that it makes for a really strong body. I've had guys rap their knuckles on the side and they thought they were hitting a chunk of concrete or stone. The beauty of all that is that it adds very little to the total weight of the body.

Jim, do you recall the density of the foam you used? I really like this idea, but I'm seeing density's ranging from 2# up to 16# for marine applications. It gets fairly pricey, so I wouldn't want to use the 16# if the 2# works. Also, do you have any idea how many cubic feet of foam you used for your interior?

We used the 2# density which worked fine. As for how much, figure the amount of area that you want to cover (length x width x depth= cubic inches) and add a little so that you can shape it to what you want.

Jim do you have a thread on how you did the floor without the wood? I'm assuming you used the same foam for the floor?

When we made the body our mold had provisions for casting the floor as one with the body. In the floor we used a structural glass called "Woven Roven". There is no wood in my body. ( Wow, that sounds kinda freaky!) LOL

Hey Jim,

How safe is this to work with? I check out what chemicals are in it and most places that sell this stuff, say to wear a mask. How did you guys go about it?

We were in a very well ventilated area and did not use masks but I would recommend that you use a good mask/respirator and I don't mean one of those little paper thingies.
