I'm with you on the double sheer, but there is an awful lot of single sheer shock mounts out there that seem to be problem free.
You could fill the gap on the top in with a plate and get it as close to the shock end leaving a small gap for movement. This would allow you to mount the shock from underneath but give it a clean 'solid' look. JMHO
