fuel pump question

I picked up a 1991 TBI 350 Chevy engine. I am going to ditch the TBI and run a carb. It has a mechanical fuel pump mounting location with a block off plate. Can I buy a mechanical pump and push rod and go ? The engine is going to be near stock and the mechanical pump would simplify things. Thanks

Need to find out if the camshaft has the lobe for the fuel pump pushrod. Insert pushrod and turn engine over by hand and see if it moves up and down.

Remove the cover plate and see if there is a hole going into the block, if there is push a dowel (don't use a screwdriver)in and touch the cam, have a helper crank the engine over and you should be able to feel the dowel being pushed back out. If there is no in and out motion you will have to use an electric pump.

I have came across at least one EFI block that had a partially machined pushrod hole. It had been started, but had not been drilled all the way through.

FYI- I pulled the cover and the oil push rod hole is there and the cam has the fuel pump lobe- thanks for you help

Depedning on what type of fuel pump you install, you may want to consider running a fuel pressure regulator and a pressure gauge inline before your carb. 1) it will help you maintain proper fuel pressure. 2) the gauge looks really nice mounted before the carb.
