If some is good, more is better, and too much is just about enough

You know I have believed that for a long time when it came to the engine in my T Bucket. And finally, I have to a agree with Ted and say maybe I was wrong.

My bucket previously had a 627hp blown 454, and it was a really nice balanced setup. Chassis hooked up well & the tires never lit up on the street, and it was a lot of fun and was an attention grabber too.

In the past few years, we have tried EFI on the 454, had the dyno guy melt the engine, upsized to a blown 540 built from junk parts, been disappointed with the performance of the new engine, and finally, bought a whole bunch of new parts and did a new 540.

The new engine is 825hp/750 ft/lbs with 650 ft/lbs by not far off idle.

I think I may have found the limit for a street engine, and its a bit less than I currently have.

Just add slicks, some wheeliebars and a onboard fire system, then your ready! Hahaha....Todd, is SelectedGrub your altered-ego????
Be careful in that monster!

We have our hot rods and muscle car drags this coming sunday and while its DYO, I think there is a prize for quickest ET. I cant see me getting too much consistency as we have to run street tyres.

The car has been IHRA tech inspected with the old engine, but I would be very surprised if I dont go quicker than my best with the old 454 - that was 10.2@132 on DOT slicks.

Well it rained overnight & for the three rounds of practise we had no VHT down & my times were slow and the track was very slippery. 60 ft times were all over 2 .0 seconds). Ran the car thru the mufflers and with regular MT street rod tyres (no QT pros)
11.8 @ 128
11.1 @ 141
11.7 @128

With some VHT down, and some Quicktime Pros on the back, I reckon the car will see a 9 no troubles, based on the 141.

Mike, are the online calculators (and the Moroso) measuring RWHP or flywheel HP? My cars weighs 2750 with me in it, so how many HP am I actually using? Engine dyno had 825 at 5 bs of boost

The car was fair hauling at the top end of the second run. Unfortunately, the radiator brackets were not 141 mph - proof and the radiator leaned back and got the bolts on the top blower pulley, so we will fix that tomorrow.

And a couple of pikkys of the car at the track yesterday.

Hot Rod Todd,

Who made those zoomies?

Thanks,

Mark

I got some double wall zoomies for $60 at a swapmeet some years back. They had come off a local funny car, and I had a local exhaust shop, Arthur & Low in New Plymouth make a matching set with some baffles in them. They were definitely quieter than the unmuffled funny car ones, but they werent very close to legal noise levels.

Then Arthur & Low made some 4 into 1 headers and they are a bit quieter, but still not very quiet.

It would be nice if there was a drag strip near here, I would really like to try out the car I got from RPM a few months ago, but the knotheads on the K.C. Mo. city council closed down the only one around here

Our drag racing club has been using the back straight of the local circuit track for the past 43 years. By and large, we get one date per month over the summer, but noise issues at the track are back on the City Councils agenda and they want to restrict us still further.

Have recently done a submission on the proposed changes, but its the same old story you have all heard before:
The track is noisy
The track was there first
New folk shift out by the track and build big new houses
New folk complain about the noise they hear from their big new houses
Council try to accommodate them by reducing noise days at the track

The really crazy thing about our noise situation, is that we are directly under the flight path for the International Airport, and the planes make way more noise coming into land than our racecars ever do. Its why the track was put there in the first place.

Similar problem here. The track was put in 1966 way out in the country then people started building around it. The sad thing is it put a lot of people out of work when it closed, an auction house and two fuel suppliers.
