They make a ring groove cleaner/scraper that makes the job a little easier-- and it adds to your tool box of NECESSITIES. Just be careful and not cut too deep.

Use the old rings

Get a 5 gallon bucket of Berryman carb cleaner. Let them soak over night. They will look like new in the morning.

You don't need expensive chemicals, let them soak in a bucket of Pine-Sol.
50/50 mix with water,, the stuff is strong.
I let my carbs soak over night, the next day the crud just wiped right off.

WOW ! This is educational. Today I used cooking oil to remove roofing patch ( tar ) from my hands. It worked great ! When I was a child , I used the original worn out rings for cleaning the grooves ( my father was a mechanic ). Time marches on.
