king pins

I just put my spindles on and have a concern.which side of the thrust bearing goes up?I put mine in with the exposed race up.Also concerning the shims, the left side would not take any, the right side took two, I assume their purpose is to take any end play. As you can probably tell it's been nearly 50 years since I put in any kingpins.

Francis, the dust shield on the bearing goes up. You want a .005 -.015 clearance. thais measurement is between the top axle boss and the under side of the upper spindle arm.

Mine were the same way, no shims on the left side and 2 shims on the right side.

Sounds like the same assembly line guys worked on both axles.

Or.....you can hire a small person to help ya.....

The easy way to think of how the thrust bearing should go is, if it were turned one way rain water would fill it like a pan. By turning it over the domed part acts as a shield to keep water out. I've also found that you usually don't need shims at first because if you painted your axle and spindles that takes up some slack. But once you start driving it you may have to go back as the paint wears away, allowing room for a shim or two.

Thanks Don that makes sense, my axle is chrome so I think that will hold up a little better than paint. I guess I better turn the bearings over.I think I have most of the parts I will need to build this car so I am sure I will have more questions.
