Level engine?

Does the engine need to be level front to back?
If it does or I want to level it.
Where should I put the level? One head or on the intake?
 
Engine placement in a build is one of the toughest things to "mock-up " IMHO. Yes , level to the world is O.K. , but how it relates to the frame , body ,& the rest of the driveline is equally important. What point are you at w/ your build? Got your frame? Frt. & Rear suspension ? Body? Tires & wheels ? Let us know where you're at w/ the build , then maybe we can advise. Look at pic's of other T's , what "look" are you going for ? ....

When I built my frame, I added shims under the trans mount so that I had room to lower it or raise it with more shims. This allowed me to fine tune the look after construction.

In my opinion, too much has been made of getting the carb absolutely level. Carbs will work at moderately odd angles. The float level may have to be adjusted, but they will work fine. On a T, getting the exhaust to sit level with the road is more important to my eye. Setting the carb mounts level will make the pipes run downhill to the back of the car with most headers, unless you fab new pipes to fix that.

FWIW, I set my car up with the pipes level and didn't really worry about the intake. I have had no problems doing it this way.

I agree with Mike, the pipes have to look right with the body and rake of the car IMHO. But it is a true marriage of having others things right too like pinion angle and interior room.

I definitely had to play with the engine angle and rake to get the driveshaft to run at a decent angle. I also had to fab a new trans cover.

This is my second car. I have every thing on it. But I'm changing the mounts from the old chevy mount to the 55-57 style.
I wanted to raise the engine a 1/2 inch. I raised the trans a 1/2 already. Just pust a 1/2 spacer under the mount.
I don't think I'm going to have a rake. I want my frame level in the front and rear.
 
Be advised that the "old" chevy frt mounts worked in conjunction w/ a mid or bellhousing mount, many feel that if you don't use the bellhousing or midplate mount , you put too much strain on the bellhousing/block flange area..

I like the 55-57 mount because getting the engine in and out for one person just makes it easier. I needed the engine to go up some.
I got the mounts on there now. Looks good. Engine level on top of intake side to side and front to back.
 
2old2fast is givin' ya the straight skinny. The front mounts only work well with the mid or bellhousing mount not with the trans tailhousing mount. Thing WILL break!!!! A lesson I learned in the early '70's.

I agree with Mike, aka Hotrod46. I set my engine up so that the pipes are level with the frame. In over 14K miles I've had no problems.

So much for speedway . tri-five's never had a mount like that !! Keep in mind that junk's ride sits quite a bit lower in the rear than most.
What angle "to the world" does your frame sit at? I don't think I'd want to be much more than a 2* forward rake w/ the engine. JMO

Ya, to get my pipes level like that and keep then engine at the height it is now. The trans would have to go way up. That would mess up my driveshaft.

I set my pipes parallel to the ground instead of to the body, and now wish I had done as you did. That looks very clean.

As far as leveling the carb, intake or whatever - I didn't try to make mine level, however even if I had I never seem to be driving or parking on level ground anyway so I guess that would have been a wasted effort on my part.
 
Jet me just say I agree with ExJunk, 2old2fast, and 409T. Now on the carb leveling the carb leveling thing, that intake manifold, by design, is designed to have the carb sitting level with the motor mounted in a stock car.
Ever notice that the competition manifolds are milled even with the centerline of the Crankshaft! If you got things where you want it and the exhaust doesn't follow the line of the body and the frame, set a protractor on there and line it up, see what the Angle is.
Take your exhausts off, off to a fab shop that has tubing bender, and right were the 4 head pipes fit inside the collector, heat it there slightly, and break it there. (Breaking as in beading it).
it'll take you longer to pull it off and put it back on than it will be to bend it where it's in line with the frame. Just a thought....

I would love to do this, but I am afraid of screwing up the ceramic coating!
