My place

Don't know much about those magnum cartridges but I favor the the old 45-70 rounds. Got two Marlin lever guns and one Ruger #3 falling block. That Ruger is a lite weight with a military style crescent shaped butt plate and it will remind you of how much powder you're touching off. The Marlins are my favorite to shoot but they to will serve notice of your age and pain level. Doesn't take much time on the range to have all the fun I can stand. Meant to get a 45-70 barrel for my Contender hand gun but never got around to it and now at my age I probably won't. Well as long as I don't run across one I won't! Hard to but ammunition across the counter for that round in the past few years. Use to see it at Walmart here in Arkansas during hunting season in several brands and bullet designs but not so much anymore. They do have a bear season but I have no interest in bothering them and they don't bother so. I did get a cub on Labor Day 2005 or 2007. Came around a tight curve descending the mountain when I spotted him in the roadside ditch. I wasn't running very fast as I was in my 1 ton flat bed in 2nd gear when he came out and crossed in front of me. I saw him go under the front end just in front of the right wheel and felt a lite thump. Looked out my drivers door window and he came rolling out. He stopped look back at me and said a few curse words in bear talk and hauled his little carcass on down the mountain. Glad I didn't hurt him and real glad I didn't meet his mama! As for deer collisions..It's not if you hit one, it's when you will hit one. I think that's part of living there. I think my brother has hit 5-6. I know he got two at one time several years ago. Part of living in that type of country I suppose. Take care.

George out of all the guns I own, or have owned in the past, the simple but beautiful Marlin 30/30 goes to the woods with me 90 percent of the time. I load my own ammo and I can shoot that gun as good at 150 yards with my loads as any gun out there. The ultra mag only comes out when hunting clear cut or Power lines. (I'm way down south so lil ol white tails are all we are hunting. Or hawgs. )

I have been keeping my eyes out for a 30-30 and Arkansas is full of them but being out od state working makes it hard to check on them. It will be a true Marlin as pre-Remingtom and I'll get one down the road. I have my name one one if anfd when they decide to sell it. That caliber would be a lot easier on my shoulder at my age and a fun shooter/truck gun.

Strangely, there are two Marlins residing at my house.....an 1895 in 45-70 and an 18894 in 44 mag. Some like mined people here!!

Yeah, that 44 would be a handy little truck gun too! My first 1895 was of the last true Marlin series with the cross bolt safety and pistol grip stock. I bought in new as I couldn't find the earlier 2nd generation that I really preferred. You already know what I'm going to tell you. Not two months later I walk into a local gun store and am walking down the counter line looking at the rifle rack on the wall. Probably about a dozen lever guns side by side but one has a big diameter barrel so I ask the counter guy was that by chance a 45-70. My lucky day! No cross bolt safety, straight grip stock and a Williams receiver rear sight and the gun was like new! It to has the crescent shaped butt plate also which I wanted. Paid more for it then I did for the new one. Looked to be extra low mileage and I later found out it was a consignment gun of an older Doctor that bought it hog hunting. Seems the recoil was more then he wanted and had only put enough rounds on it to get it zeroed, Don't think he ever carried it to the field. When I went to zero it on the 100 yard range I realized he was planning to be real close and that's when I ask the dealer about who and what purpose did they have in mind. Great rifle for sure. I intended to get a short 18' Barreled Guide Gun but once Marlin was sold the horror stories stared coming out and the JM marked guns got scarce and pricy. Hang on to those two as they are keepers forever. Take care and Happy Shooting!

I hope you have better luck with your man-cave/workshop than I've had...built 2 and never got to use either. Now I share a shed with mowers and lawn & garden equipment
