new pins all round

All the pins on my chassis and suspension were made with a tapered head. They looked great but with no way of tightening them up; looks had to give way to practicality. After thinking about punching a hex hole for allen keys i thought lets go one better and do them with a star drive (this will fit with the gas tank design I have in mind). So off to my mates at Linton Engineering to talk things over. What came out of this was they had to wire cut an electrode for the spark eroder to cut the stars into the head of each pin. A well know maker will only supply the dimensions at a cost so we did our own star drive design which it happens fit a T40 driver.
So eventually I got the 16 pins and the 18 matching caps. I think they look brilliant and sets the mounting point off to a T!! Every pin on the T will look like this, radius rods, rear end even the engine mounts.
What say you, guys

Gerry, those are slick!

Torx is the way to go hard to strip and look awesome.

Looks cool. what are the pins made out of?

Russ
dang it. I gota get busy, you're catching up to me.

sure are pretty but how do you lock them? Drill them for safety wire? Locktite would prolly strip the small heads getting them loose.

Hope this answers your questions
The pins are threaded in the end to take a mirror image tapered head on a 6mm thread. All the suspension pins are in shear so a bit of locktite on the small one will secure the pin in its double shear bracket.
The ones on the steering are threaded on the main pins and screw in to the steering arm bosses. Then the cap goes in on the 6mm thread with locktite again. After 70 miles of A frame towing not ONE of these was loose.
As to getting them tight... well I had one on the rear end that got a little tight. The long series 40 T SHEARED off level with the top of the pin. That show how much force these will take. It also undone with another 40T . I cant express my thanks to Linton Engineering for making these, they are BRILLIANT. Made from 316 S Steel on Lintons recommendation. I just KNOW they got it right and one day I will tell the story that makes me know this.

Gerry, We all want to see the back side of the nut/end, so to speak, at least I would :) As far as coming loose, it sometimes takes many hard miles to get things to loosen up and nuts to fall off or out, driving down a freeway is not the place to find that out, like I did... :)

Hope this is what you wanted to see.

Like all racers I do a nut check every run. On the trip to the nats we stopped after 2 miles, then after another 5, then after another 10. On the way back we stopped after 15 and checked everything when we got home.
I dont trust things till they proove they are right.
Before and after every race you do one thing. NUT CHECK, including the wheels

Gerry, Thanks for that pic, it cleared up many thoughts I was having, words sometimes are hard to visualize just what a person was trying to get across, I was a slow learner in school because of just that... I now know how it works, the small threaded end is the locking end... :)

you got it. This is only my way of thinking so I hope it works out. As I said a nut check every time till I'm comfortable they will stay tight, is my insurance. The one thing I can say is that the T40 drives can be tightened like nothing I have ever had on a rod before

Gerry, when I was in AZ, visiting my Son, he showed me his favorite new tool, Bosch PS40-2A 12-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Impact Driver... Works great for taking things apart, I believe I am getting one for myself.. be perfect for your new pins, both ends... on sale at Amazon for $119 .. just a thought :)

Hey Gerry,

Another item of your car that's worthy of praise.

My little gray cells are taking all this in with the idea of a copy of your design. If your steal from one peson, it's palgerism, If you steal from several, it's called research.

These pins look so good, I can't help but wonder if there was a computer or two involved......

only computer was the CNC on the wire cutter to produce the tool for the spark eroder and the lathe to turn them. (It was not worth doing the turning by hand as there are over 35 pieces in total.) And then it was hand programed as we could not get any dimesions for the star drive from the well known maker unless we paid then.
