no room

I have a problem, spirit body is channeld three inches. With any seat there is no room' and the steering wheel would have to be half way up the dash, and I can't get my foot back far enough to use the brake. To bring everyone up to date, I have the rolling the chassis finished and cut the hole for the brake pedal and the trans hump modified to fit.My question is, has anyone cut out a channeled floor and replaced it with a flat floor? I could start cutting and gluing, but like Ted said I am here to learn, because this is my first project of this kind and I hope I can make it nice. Thanks for any help.

The problem with cutting the floor out is that the frame would be in the way unless your frame is
out to the outside of the body.

Try some different seat hieghts. The higher you sit the more room you'll have for your feet. I'm not familiar with the Spirit brake pedal but if it's one of those that is basicaly a straight length you could fab one like the early Fords ( like a '40 ) to move it closer to the firewall. I wouldn't suggest unchanneling the body if you can help it.

The frame came from RPM with all the brackets and mc frame in it.The only way I can sit in it and have any room is almost on the floor, and them the steering column is on my knees.

If the steering column is on your knees can you either shorten the column drop or cut down the seat riser? Changing the brake pedal or modifying the pedal arm as Youngster suggested should help there. Nevertheless I have to agree that moving the floor down to being flush with the sides of the body might not be the best idea. It will cause the body to sit high and expose all of the frame rail like a hi-boy model A or deuce. Works for some cars, not so much for others.

I don't know how tall or heavy you are but I'm 6'-1 1/2' tall and 160 lbs. and I did a Spirit '27 with their insert for a friend of mine and I fit quite comfortably in that car. The only complaint that I had was the quality of the body out of the mold but that is another issue all together.

Here are pictures of that car.

I think I found the answer.I just tried a seat base from spirit, it sits me barely off the floor, it was meant to go with their insert which would be far to much for me. So I will upholster it fasten it down and call it done.Jim I am 6' 260 lbs size 14 shoes so I think you will understand my problem. thanks to everyone for your responses.

I have always liked that T. Dont know why. Its too long on the front end etc etc but for some reason it hit a beat with me.Maybee the flathead and its so unassuming.
Either way its a great ride.

Gerry, I agree totally with your thoughts on the length. I should have said that what I did on that build was the body work and paint. The fellow on the crutches in the pictures is the owner/builder. He built most of that car by scooting around on his garage floor on his butt. I was so impressed with his "gutsiness" that I offered to do the body and paint for him for nothing.

I remember the first post on this Bucket and recognized the guy in the background, not to mention the color choice... cool
