Odyssey Batteries

I originally had an Odyssey Extreme battery installed in my bucket, but it really didn't do the job I needed it to. I had some problems getting my 454 started, and the Odyssey wasn't able to crank it very long. I ended up swapping it out for an Optima Red top and the difference was very noticible. The engine turned over much faster and the battery seems to last much longer. While the Odyssey was much smaller and easier to stick into tight places, I found the Optima to be a better solution.

Gerry - What is the price on one of those compared to the $200 for an Odyssey?

Not cheap I'm afraid. That one cost me around £200.00 and the charger is another 100.00 on top but it does condition the battery, maintain it and can be left on over the down months. Mind you my other half got it for me at Xams and went for the top spec one (Thanks darling).

There is one down side with these batteries in that of they drop below 11 volts it kills them (as in throw them away). Up side is 350 amp and smaller than a penguins perker at 40 below. There is no loss of amps as they are used. Also capacity is only 16 AmpHour but with a bucket I don't see that as a problem.

We used a antigrav power pack, (as used to start flat batteries) which was about 1/4 of the size of mine, to start a methanol slingshot from cold. It did it no problem and then proceeded to start it again 8 times in the day.

Gerry... Did you grab that battery when it was floating around your garage ?

They are absolute pigs to catch on full charge. Best leave them for 6 months or so when they are down to about 85% and sneak up on them from the side.
