Painting your frame

Was wondering if anyone have used Por-15 on their frames? Need to know pro and cons. Rebuilding my roadster and have stripped it down to bare metal and getting ready to shoot it. They claim it doesn't chip etc...... Need to know the truth before I use it.

I've used BlackCote made by Por-15. It doesn't come off with anything but a grinder or sandpaper.

Thanks, I am planning on Por-15 and then top coating with BlackCote. Its down to bare metal now, planning on washing frame down with Muratic acid and let it rust for a couple of days and then will paint. I'll let you know how it works out.

What??!! Why would you intentionally invite rust? If you trap rust under your paint you will get pits and blisters later on. As soon as you finish grinding, sanding, blasting (or whatever method of preparation you use), etc, you need to get the finish on there while the metal is still clean.

He believes in what POR stands for which is "Paint Over Rust". I, for one, do not like doing that. I grind and sand and then apply a good primer then sand and prep for a nice paint job. This is how I did my frame and it has held up beautifully with no chips or other flaws in over six and a half years of driving.

Yeah, I agree. I take mine down to clean, bare metal, wipe it down with degreaser, shoot etch primer first, then 2-3 coats of epoxy primer, then the final color. If it needs some body work I use hibuild epoxy and block sand it then shoot it. When I redid my 27 frame a few years ago the Dupont Centari I shot over 20 years ago still looked good, I just wanted a color change.

I think leaving rust on for any reason is asking for trouble.

From everything I have read POR-15 needs a slight surface rust film to "key" onto the chassis. Something about the chemical reaction between the rust, steel and paint. Not sure about a couple of days worth though. My understanding is, after surface prep is done you hose off the chassis and let it dry naturally and then paint over the film. Mind you I mis-understand a whole heap of stuff too.

My ol' buddy Bruce up in WI Por-15'd his frame with a foam brush and I know lots of Volksrodders that have used Por 15 on their pans.

The directions say something about sunlight, so I guess that means you need to paint OVER it, and if that's the case, then why not just prime and paint it without the Por 15?
