Spring perch

I am getting ready to mount my spring perch. Most of the buckets I look at have the perch mounted with the spring underneath. The plans I am using show the mount with the spring on top. By mounting the perch by the plans I have I would lower the car by the thickness of the spring roughly. Does it matter whether the spring is on top or bottom?

It could cause a clearance issue for spring travel, just something to check. It also may require a saddle for any curveature of the spring and some serious bolts or u-bolts since all of your front chassis weight would be supported by the bolts or u-bolts. JMO.......Ron(ruggs)

The hiegth of the frame can vary by where you place that perch. It can be mounted anywhere from the top of the front cross member to the bottom of it. In essents you have a 3" variance in the hiegth of your front cross member.

In all reality you should have your axle-spring-radius rods- wheel & tires all mounted up together, (use a spring spreader to get the shackles to ride about a 45 degree angle, this should be close to where the spring perch should be, set frame so the engine pan clears by at least 5 or 6 inches) use blocks or whatever to hold the rear of the radius rods up in place, so the spindles sit at the correct caster. Now if you have your frame all together, less front spring perch with it sitting in place, you should be able to make a cardboard pattern to get the perch correct as to your own needs.. Hope that was clear? That perch can be made to mount the spring at ANY height... :)

Sounds to me that the better option is keeping the spring under and changing the perch.......ruggs

This is true Ted but I believe that's why he's asking here. There are many on here that can help with this deviation from the set of plans he's using.

Mine has the spring on top of the perch (CCR type). I have never had a problem nor have I seen any bolts break, but I have always thought the perch on top of the spring is much stronger. The entire weight of the front half of the car is sitting on the perch over the spring. Whereas mine the weight is held by 4 - 7/16" bolts with the spring on top of the perch. Like I said, I ain't broke no bolts nor seen any break, but I still say its safer to have the perch over the spring.
