George,
What kind of helicopter company was that? Army or civilian? I was in HMM-264 (USMC) and I have worked for PHI, Inc (Petroleum Helicopters) for the last 37 years
That would have been Army Aviation. We were an Assault Helicopter Company flying in support of anyone in our area that needed help. Flew with the 116th AHC under the 1st Aviation Brigade out of the 25th Inf Division's base at Cu Chi. We supported the 25th ID, 1st Div, 9th Div, Australian Forces, Special Force teams, Navy SEALs south in the Delta and others. Never saw many Marines in our area as I think they were all pretty much north. Started out on UH-1 slicks but went to the gun platoon with in a month of being there. We had one D model slick with a 20mm cannon out the right door and it was brutal. Would move the ship side ways and shake the blades out of track with in a few days of heavy firing. Maintenance got tire of that so we hung it upside down between the skids and the pilot fired it of the cyclic stick. Had a grease marker cross hair on the windshield and noted in the log book to not remove it. A real smoker that could reach out a long way before you were in the get shot down range. Went to a B model gunship a short time later that was armed with 48 rockets and I stayed with her for the remainder of an 18 month tour. Got to Ft. Sill, OK in late 69 and signed the papers to go back the day after I arrived. Went back to the same company and many of the same people and got back to C model gunships. Left in March of 70 for good. Did 29 months with the same company and never regretted one day. To bad those things cost so much to operate as everybody needs at least one! I had a lot of friends go fly for PHI after the war and stayed till they retired. Must have been a good job for that bunch to stay long. I'm thinking you said you finally retired but I could be mistaken. Take care and stay safe!
