Your'e right Ted it is smack in the way but it's the best I could do when I figured out that I needed something to steady the column. Sometimes you just have to what you have to do.
The one I am working on now will not have this problem as I have allowed a place to mount it from under the dash.

Well I think you forgot that you could have gone forward, instead if backwards, if anything.. I just mount the column to the firewall, or in your case the floor, why is there anything else needed? I have run all my cars that I have built over all these years, with NO column brace, no problems... Always use at least 3 bolts, 4 is better yet to mount the bottom plate... I even hang on it to get in... from the Riders side, very seldom get in or out on the Drivers side, that makes one feel like a Monkey humpin a football... hehe Still you did a very clean job.
