305/Edelbrock Tuning Help

I am building a 27 Roadster with a newly rebuilt 305 w/ 4BBL Edelbrock.
It was running rough and I timed it to 0 degrees.
At low idle if I punched it it would die.
At fast Idle it ran somewhat smooth. When I punched it came up well.
Still running a little rough so I ran the fuel mixture screws in till lightly seated and the passenger side screw was set at 2.75 turns and driver side at 1.5 Turns.
Played with several settings and tried to adjust timing by ear to smooth out.
Now it won't start even at previous settings.
When it was running I had some missing and occaional flame sputters from the carb.
Any advice on starting from scratch will be appreciated.

Most SBC need 12-14 degrees of timing.
