I just got my pitman arm back form being chrome plated and hate to use the lock nut against my new chrome.Has anyone used a washer between the locknut and the arm, also is it safe to do so? Thanks

Yes by all means use a washer but use some blue lock-tite.Red will lock it out and need heat to break loose.I have a tapered tyrod end on mine so thats where i base my opinion on.
May I suggest you use two brass, bronze or aluminum washer or combitation thereof. Two washers will allow one to turn with the nut what the other (theoretically) remains stationary against the pitman arm. A little schmutz to lubricate the action might be appropriate.
If the washer get scruffed, remove the nut leaving the arm seated properly and replace the washers or change to stainless. And, I agree with Rick on the Locktite.
