Computing coil over shock resistance

What is it? I weigh 170lb and my girl is 120lb. What rate with 10 gal tank? What is the optimum rate on a coil spring on a coil shock?

I got 140s on mine and it seems about right

the formula is corner weight/ suspension crush x leverage = spring rate. so if you know what the rear of the car weighs...

Fred,
You need the rear total weight...

If your t is drivable now, take you and your lady friend for a drive to a set of scales and just pull the rear of your t onto the scales and get the total rear weight of the car..

Its not just the weight of everything on the back end of the car, its everything plus the center of gravity of the T comes into play, wheelbase, weight of the engine, trans and everything else...

Hope this helps...

Shock rate, guys.

Shock rate ? you want damping info ? or spring rate.
For damping, get something with very light compression damping. I found that is the key to making a T ride nice. With the air ride I use alot, I can set the pressure very low, to get a soft ride, but a stiff shock will still produce a harsh ride.
For spring rate, weigh the car, do the math, and you will get the best results.

I just got off the phone with the tech guy at Pro-Formance Shocks and he said the rear end is unsprung weight so with everyones thinking you would have to weigh the car rip out the rear end and tires then weigh the rear subtract then that is the spring rate.Does not sound like fun.He sold Total all there shocks and he said theres are 150 lb springs Totals catalog says 160.hes calling me back at 1:00 he went to lunch and is going to check on some 125 lb springs for me.Frankly as skinny as i am my car beats the living tar out of me.

technically yes. but in reality not so much. Since you are probably going to end up with a number, that you are not going to directly match to a spring exactly, it gives you a close enough ballpark to work with.

Ive got 160 LB's now since i dont weigh squat i'm going with 125 LB's Jim seamed to think that would work just fine.Carrera has them in Speedways catalog page 96 for $49.99 each chrome plated.I would like to find them just plain.

I Fred,

Dampening rates like compression or rebound are hard to know on generic shocks without measuring them with what I think is called a shock dyno (not 100% that's what it's called). Your best bet, if you can afford it, is to get some adjustable shocks. Try to get two way adjustable if you can. Then compression and rebound can be adjusted. Ebay sometimes has good used ones for sale.

If your trying to get something off the shelf that will work, try to choose a model that physically fits (of course), and is from a car that is similar in weight as yours. At least then the dampening rates will be close.

I'm sure there is some model of shock that others have used before with great results, but I have no idea which model to look for. Others will need to chime in.

I can't answer the question but here is a chart that will show the effective spring rate based on the mounting angle of the coil over. Here is a chart from the 2009 Speedway catalog.

Once you figure most of it out (desired spring rate) this will help you figure out the final number you need based on the mounting angle.

Well that didn't work. Here is a link to the chart on my photobucket album. http://s406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/landracer/?action=view&current=CoiloversMounting.jpg

What was the trick to posting it? I clicked on the "insert image" icon, pasted in the URL and nothing happened.

try jeg's they have QA-1 springs that are powder coated silver .. depending on what length spring you need, they have 125# in 10inch springs and 130# in 12inch springs.
