You are not going to believe this one.
Every Saturday morning, I go to the local WalMart to buy groceries. Not every week, but most weeks, I will grab a 6 pack of something or another. Today, it was Sam Adams Summer Ale.
I am setting things up on the belt at the cash register and I noticed the cashier had quit ringing things up. I didn't pay too much attention and started to slide my debit card through their card scanner, when she said, "I need to see a photo ID."
I was in another galaxy, thinking about something else and asked her to please repeat what she said. When she said it again, I asked whatever she needed ID for. I wasn't buying any of that demon cold medicine or anything.
She pointed to the beer and said she needed a photo ID to sell me the beer.
The legal drinking age in Indiana is 21, but they now have a new law where a cashier can ask for ID if you appear to be younger than 40.
My hair is rapidly going gray, my goatee is more gray than brown and it's not like this was my first visit to the store. I chuckled and pulled the collar of my t-shirt down to show her the gray hair at the base of my neck. I told her that as of today I am 54 years, 10 months and 4 days old.
She repeated her request for my ID. I explained my wallet was in the truck and my driver's license was in the wallet. She asked if I wanted to go out to get it and I told her I didn't. She told me she couldn't sell me the beer.
I quietly dropped my debit card back into my pocket and walked out. I am flattered she thought I was under the age of 40, but the legal age is still 21 and I should think there would be no doubt I am over that age.
Carded at the age of 54. Who'd a thunk it?
