FRONT SPRING

The Hustler

New Member
Can someone tell me the difference between the front leaf spring being on top of the axle or behind the axle? I'm cornfuzed!

Well, the way Henry Ford did it was spring on top of the axle (at least until 1935, then he put it in front of the axle), but hot rodders wanted their cars lower and one way to accomplish it is by putting the spring behind (called suicide front end, because the theory is, if the spring breaks there is nothing to keep the front end from dropping onto the pavement)

What else do you want to know about them ?

Here is a picture of it behind the axle.

Basically ride height that is what most guys look at.
