Fuel tank venting

I'm using a Total Performance tank with a boat fuel fill similar to T.P.'s original plans. The boat fuel fill and cap are not vented nor is the T.P. tank. My question is, can I successfully vent the tank through the filler neck as this picture shows? I wouldn't use the return line back to the tank just to the atmosphere.

A vented cap would have been ideal but not practical or as economical with the tank or plans that I have. Kind of hard to explain as a vented cap would be very easy & I'm not trying to complicate things.
