As many of you know, I had a hand in building a Land Speed car for my friend, Bob Cox. Last Saturday at Maxton Miracle Mile in North Carolina, it set a new world record in the B/Gas Altered Coupe class at 188.23 MPH, breaking the old record by 6 MPH. The speed was faster than the AA an A records but since you must challenge each record separately, only the B record is claimed.
The car ran VERY strong but at the 3/4 mile mark there is a very bad dip that causes the car to become unstable and it is very unnerving to start to float at 170 MPH. Trying to make small corrections and keep your foot in it is difficult. Bob says that had he not lifted he would have gone 205 because the engine was pulling that hard.
If all goes as planned, the car will probably be back out at Bonneville next year.
