Grill Shell

Does anyone have a fab picture of their free standing grill shell with no support rods? I want to run without the rods and have a pretty good idea of how to accomplish it but would like to see how others are doing it.

Perhaps what I have done will help you. I, too, do not particularly care for exposed support rods. My car has a cross member behind the radiator but with a small modification it can be adapted to mount to the frame rails. I know this for a fact because it has been adapted for use on a Total Performance frame that has the usual front cross member mounted ahead of the radiator.

Here are a few pictures that will show you what I'm talking about.

The two side pieces are 1"x1"x1/8"angle that fit around the corners of the radiator while the top piece is also a 1"x1"x1/8" angle the is mounted in reverse so as to support the radiator tank that protrudes past the core. The bottom is a piece of 1"x1/8" flat bar and the "X" braces are 1/2"x1/8" flat bar. There is a mount that attaches this framework to the cross member or the frame rail that I made from a piece of 10 gauge steel that I bent into an angle and welded to the vertical pieces and then screwed onto the cross member or frame rail if you have a conventional frame.

This makes for a VERY sturdy mount. There is ABSOLUTELY no vibration with this set up.

I hope that this helps you out.

Jim

P.S. If you need further clarification on this set up, let me know and I'll make a drawing for you.
