Propane Tank Warning!!!!

A friend of mine that works at a local newspaper sent me this..

A message from the National Propane Association:

For those of you who like to grill it up during the summer, here's a
safety announcement you should be aware of. Please put this information
out to ALL personnel. For those of you who exchange your propane tanks,
this is something you definitely need to be aware of, especially in
light of the recent news of 'Meth-labs' in our area. Meth cooks are
getting propane tanks from exchanges at Wal-Mart, Lowe's, etc. and
emptying them of the propane. Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia (which they now havea recipe for by the way). After they are finished with them, they returnthem to the store. They are then refilled with propane and sent back foryou and me to buy.
Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the
structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane
and hooked up to our grills, etc. You should inspect the propane tank
for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas. If it is
present, refuse to purchase that tank. Check out the following website
for more details. They also have pictures.

Thats good info. I usually have my tanks filled at a camper sales its cheaper that way but sometime Kmart is the only choice. :)...Francis

Thanks for sharing man ! We love to grill out and thats good to know .
Them stupid meth people are ruining everything ,i wish some one could put a stop to all this stupidity !It scares the hell out of me to thing of my kid getting involved in that juck . What kind a crap are they gonna come up with next ,i herd of a couple that was pulled over by the police a while back and was cooking meth in the car while they were driving around and if that wasnt enough they had there childrin in there with them.
What is the world comeing to???:mad::mad:

It's probably a good warning.

Here's a snopes article with more information. It looks like while this is a possibility, it hasn't surfaced as a reality yet. However, it also gives more information on what to watch for.

My guess is that any tank that shows the signs would not be refilled, anyway.

Now I'm really glad I still use charcoal!!! I would hope those that sell cylinders are aware of this.

Ron

Thanks for the warning and I'll pass it on.

As a REAL Texas griller, I'll continue to grill the way men should grill. With charcoal and a good variety of wood chips.;) Can't beat the aroma of good mesquite, hickory or peach wood. Brings out the caveman in ya.:)
