Re-build on S-10 rear end

I have a 1996 S-10 rear end from a junk yard. The outside casing/housing had gunk all over it and I assume it was from pinion seal leaking. So I'm thinking while it's not attached yet to the frame why not pull it apart and inspect all bearings & gears. The gears actually look good, but have not looked at bearings yet.

Question, If after inspection I only end up relacing the seals, do I need to check backlash since I'm re-using all spacers and bearings? :tnku:

Hello it is a crush type spacer if you manage not to overtorque your pinion nut you should not change the backlash, if it is not dismanteled yet count the treads coming out from your nut or mark it so you can remember this will prevent wou from crushing more your spacer and keep your backlash.Do not forget to put selant inside your yoke so it wont leak. Hope it will help.:bubble: . Worked for mine.

You will need to because the s-10 is usually GM 10 bolt 7.5 hopefully you got lucky and got a 3:42 and not a 3:08 but either way the front pinion seal require to replace the crush sleeve and at that time you would need to recheck your backlash but it's worth it because if it came from a yard the front pinion bearing would more than likely be full of grit due to condensation and will pit the bearing soon.

A lot of S-10 rear-ends are 3.73s as is mine.
