Ted is right, that cross member will allow some degree of twist, it was designed to do that. That's why you want to find a '27 crossmember. It has a lip on the leading and trailing edges like the Model A. Not showing in the picture are the corner gussets and the 1 1/2" square tube crossmember at the top of the kick.

Thanks for the information. If I run a rectangular tube across right at the top of the kick-up then mount the cross member at the rear would that cut down on the twist? Bob
 
Yup, that's what I did on that car. I also welded some gussets to the cross member on the inside corners.
