Right front hub difficult to turn

Track T-4

Decided to start a new thread...

When I have the T up on jack stands the right wheel turns freely for about 1/3-1/2 of the rotation but it gets really hard to turn the rest of the rotation as if something is dragging and then it frees up for the 1/3-1/2 rotation again. I've tried swapping the drums side-to-side but they both act they same. Both drums turn freely when mounted on the left side. I don't think it's the brake shoes dragging because I backed them all the way in, put blue tape on them and that didn't appear to be affected. I also don't hear any metal-to-metal contact. I believe the drums are '37 to '41 Ford.

I want to get this fixed because the right tire bounces when driving and is probably related to this problem.

Both hubs did the same thing on the right side but not on the left so I'm thinking it's the right side spindle and not he hubs/drums (?). Is there supposed to be something on the spindle before I slide the bearing/hub assembly on? I do smear a little grease on the spindle before mounting. Am I missing something?

Kind of a "shot in the dark" ... should be pretty easy to remove the backing plate & brake assy... then try your hub ?? Can't think of anything else that would bind [being that nothing binds on the left ....

Can the drum be dragging on the backing plate?

I don't think it's the bearings or the hub because both wheels work fine on the left side but act incorrectly on the right. I'm going to spend more time on it today and try to isolate the cause.

I'm confused , Have you swaped hubs to the opposite spindles and there is no problem? With drums?
Just wandering.

I bet the only thing left is the spindle being bent.

That is what I am thinking. The donor car could have been in an accident or hit a pothole, who knows as it is 70 + years old. The area where the seal rides might be not round too. Start removing parts and see where the binding stops. Start with the grease seal and see if that makes any difference. There might also be some kind of interferance where the hub slides into the backing plate, like maybe a bolt head that holds the backing plate to the spindle.

One easy thing to do is remove the shoes entirely, put the hub and drum back on and see if it still binds. Sometimes the backing plates can get warped and will rub in a certain position. If it comes down to it, remove the shoes AND the backing plate on that side and then turn the drum. You will be able to rule out a bent spindle because you will have an unobstructed view of the internals as they spin.
