shock absorber

Hi everyone:
I am looking for some help on shock absorbers. I have a coil spring setup with 160lb/in springs. The car rides as if the rear suspension were solid. The car moves easily up and down until I attach the shocks. I am using Hyundai Excel shocks set at 20 degrees. Can anyone give me a suggetion as to a different shock or something alse wrong with the setup.

Thanks

Are the shocks gas? It sounds like you are on the threshold of solid with the springs and the shocks, if gas have put you over on being too hard. There are plenty of guys that know all the poundage numbers that are good for Ts, they are just recouping from too much turkey and dressing and will respond shortly.

Thanks for the reply. Yes there are gas charged.

If you have Vega spring they are pretty stiff I put in 125Lb qa1 springs and oil shocks, Which helped my ride . I am still thinking going with coilovers. How does it ride full of gas with two people? This is some thing that is bad about having regular springs. not adjustable tension.

I'm running a beer keg for a gas tank so I never fill it, usually run about 10 gallons and usually only myself in the car. I have had two
people on occasion and it still rides hard

Qa1 springs

I believe these are the ones I installed they look tapered in the pic but aren't. If you take the spring out and measure the height and Od and ID and wire size
then call Qa1 they will tell you how heavy your springs are. Mine improved the ride alot cheap for 100.00

Thanks for the info.If we get some warm weather I'll pull a spring and take the measurements

I think that is your problem. If it bounces good with out shocks, then doesnt with shocks, clearly the problem is the shocks. I have noticed that these light cars are real sensitive to the shock damping. Try using a non gas shock.
On the very first T I ever built, I put on a set of doestch tech nitro slammers that we use for the rear of air bagged trucks. The pressure in those shocks was enough to lift the back of the car (with no gas and no upholstery). I could let the air out of the bags and watch it go down, then it would slowly start to rise. And when the car was done, it was real rough over small bumps. A change in shocks made it a lot better, Ultimately the car ended up with a set of Alston's vari shocks on it, and ended up riding real nice.
Since you know what your shocks are off of, get a set of monroe matic shocks (the blue ones). They are a pretty soft shock.

The shocks are no aligned and when you hook them up they are binding on the shaft. If you are pulling or pushing the shocks onto their mounting you are causing them to bind. Add or subtract spacers or whatever is required to eliminate the binding and your will find it will ride perfect.

Sound like they are right on the shocks my shocks are mounted straight up in the middle of the spring.

Thanks for the tip on the shocks, I'll check and make sure there are not binding.,
