Speedway Budget Hinges

New Member
I am going to install a passenger side door in a TP body. I ordered the "budget hinges" from Speedway. Has anyone ever used these? I didnt realize how big they were. Just looking for someone that has used them and how they intalled them. I guess I was thinking of hidden hinges when I bought them. I am not sure if I want to cut my body that much to make them work. If anyone has used them, let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

McDenny,
This type of hinge may be a better option. I haven't bought from this person but if you look at them it may give you more insite,JMO.........ruggsMy link

I used similar hinges to the original 'T" ones on mine and I like them. They weren't original 'T' hinges, but they were model A repro hinges connected with welded straps. the end result was basically the same. I've seen the hinges you bought from Speedway and wondered what they fit or typically go on. they do seem a bit big and bulky, but I've never seen them in person. The nice thing about the "T" style hinges,is that it makes it easier to get the door swung properly as the top and bottom hinge are connected. I have a link to an older (mid 60's) article on cutting and swinging T doors. Link is HERE

I am in the process of installing a door on my TP body. I did a lot of research before starting to inatall the door and most of the articles recommended using the original T hinges. I bought the used hinge off of the net and have them installed but not cut the door out yet. Liked the look of the original hinge besides easier to install.

The hinges that ruggs suggested are definitely the easier of the two types to install and possibly the stronger of the two as well. If you do use the budget hinges, one trick to make things simpler is to remove the hinge pins and replace them with one rod that is long enough to run through both sets of hinges while they are positioned on the car and door. This will keep the hinges parallel to each other. After you have everything set, you can remove the rod and put the individual pins back in.

OK, I have a "stupid" question. I was pondering the thought of making the passenger door a "suicide" door. Has anyone ever used a heavy duty piano hinge and conceal it in the jam?

I don't think you can use a piano hinge because of the body contour. My CCR body uses what looks like the total performance deck lid hinges and it works cool. I would not have a suicide door on this type of body because if it ever came ajar it would be ripped right off the car . JMHO

If you want a CONCEALED hinge, use the one that Rooster has from CCR. I also agree with him about suicide doors. Secondly, if you do try a suicide door and don't use a concealed hinge, you will have hinge pins right at the middle of the body which I think would look out of place. Just my .02

I know suicide doors could be a issue, I just like the thought of having one, just wanted to be different. I will look into the hinges mentioned, and if I did a suicide door, it would be a concealed hinge. I am not sure how much the body would flex on a car like this, if it possable to have the door "pop" open if you throttled up. Who knows, too many ideas running through my head at times :eek:hthedrama:

Have a 32 3 window with suicide doors. First we bought on of the aftermarket fancy suicide locks. I did not like and went to the hardware store and got a slide bolt that was satin nickel. Bolted to the door, drilled a slightly oversize hole in the door jamb, and wa-la door locked. You just have to remember to slide the bolt when you close the door and yes it will peal the door off if comes open while driving.
