upgraded exhaust

Figured I would post up a tech piece to test out my like/dislike for the use of Photobucket uploading.
So far...not very impressed with the "modern" photobucket.
I'm finding photobucket to be irritating as it kind of bombards you with advertising and slows down my computer some.

Anyway...on with the test! LoL

My sprint header mufflers were burnt out and extra noisy. I decided to make longer and bigger tube mufflers to replace them.
I picked up 4 cherry bombs and test fit them with band clamps to get an idea on length.

Once I settled on a length I cut the CB's apart and made 2 extra long mufflers from the bits.

If you look inside the CB's you can see that only one end of the inner baffle tube is welded and the other slip fits. By cutting the outer shell on the welded side the whole inner tube and fiberglass packing slips out easily.
The shells and baffles were cut to length, reinstalled and welded together to make the longer mufflers.
I also made a simple front baffle for the collector area...but if given my time back I would have just left the tube open for a little more flow and sound.

To hold the weight of the heavier mufflers I made hangers from early Chevy truck lever shock arms. Cut down Landcruiser leaf spring bushings fit perfectly as insulators and 3 hole tabs allow mounting to the rear band clamps and onto the arm insulators.
Worked perfectly and give an interesting look.

The new mufflers were welded onto the headers and the cut down turnout was welded to the rear. The weld areas were ground down a bit and treated with zinc primer for rust protection. These weld areas are covered with stainless band clamps.

To cover the mufflers I had a local sheet metal shop roll satin finish stainless to fit the diameter and pinched them in place on the mufflers with the band clamps. I like the different look of the satin finish and the chrome working together. Have had some nice compliments on the overall look and on the sound. Much deeper and no rasp like the old inserts.

Ok...that took about an hour and 15 minutes to do...inc uploading the pics to Photobucket.
PBucket is blocked with advertising which slows down the process a bit...but its workable.
I wonder will these photos disappear as I add more photos to the PBucket file? Hope not.

I would be much happier to just add photos directly to the site...but Pbucket is...manageable.

now...post and see how it looks! :D

Nice roll bar. The pics will stay, until you delete them.

I lost a friend and his wife to a slow roll in their t bucket.
So yes...it IS a nice roll bar...even if some don't care for it.
At least its something to hopefully keep the body lip off your chest.

It looks great.
I hope the guys figure out how to change the permissions to upload pics direct.
I am in the same boat with the custom exhaust, I have the headers on and only have 16" for muffler and turn out.
Thanks for the great idea.

It's a good shape for a T Bucket. For some reason, a lot of roll bars on T Buckets look awkward.

Did you ever notice the couple in the back ground of your pic? The woman could car less and is looking in a totally different direction. But the guy, he's all about checking out your car. :D

Wow...thats tight.
Can't remember how long my old extensions and inserts were...but I don't believe they were really loud or irritating when new.
These were old and burned up inside, so not a nice sound at all.
The issue I had, and what made me decide not to just order a new set, was they seemed very restrictive with only around a 1 1/2" inner tube to flow exhaust thru.
Too small for the big block to me...so I upsized the pipes to 2" internal.
Still not big...but big enough.

Nice work on the mufflers! I also like the roll bar, I have a similar one in mind for mine, more to protect from a rear collision, than a roll over, but ive been through reconstructive spine surgery and want a little protection.

I didn't notice that!
To be honest there are cars everywhere around that building. Approx 3 rows thick!
She was looking at a different car for sure.
The story is, this was a highway meeting point to get a Police escort to a "small" outdoor show to benefit a young child with cancer.
At the actual show location they were forced to include an additional lot for parking due to the number of people and cars that made the run, and the show was a huge success with a lot of money raised.

On a personal level I loved it simply because it took a decent bit of highway and coastal road driving to get there!

Wow, nice planing, photos and fabrication. Very nice !!!

Thanks for taking the time to post those pics from PBucket, not something I'm willing to do. Now don't EVER change the file name or location and they will stay visible.

NICE! I have been bouncing the idea of Purple Hornies as mufflers and this may be just the ticket for support.
