Getting a title

Johnny

Member
I know about getting these hot rods titled. Now, should I wait until I've finished putting the T together, or should I try to get one asap?? If I purchase one, I don't have to put it in my name until I want to. Right?
Enlighten me y'all.

Thanks

There are quite a few guys on this forum from Texas, where you live, that should be able to give you an answer. Every state is different so it is best to get your info from your home state.

Here in Louisiana you need a letter of origen , resipts telling where you got the materials to build the car and an inspection from the Statetroopers office after it is built . My dad had to jump through hoops to get a title here in louisiana. Acording to the DMV and State troopers all you need to get a title is a bill of origin but it wasn't enough. and you won't get a title saying what the car really is, just a title saying it is a 2009 builder or what ever year you built the car. That is what they call a kit car or any car made from scratch and you have to pay taxes comparable to the year you built it. it took almost 6 months after he sent in the paperwork before he even heard from any one.boy was he mad. he went and got all the paperwork and he took the paperwork to Mississippi and in less than 30 min he had a registration and plate saying it was a 24 T bucket. I know this might not work for you where you live but for any one else that reads this it might help them. and to answer your question on if you should do it now? I would go to your local DMV and State troopers office and get as much info as you can and start the prosses now.

Just get the title changed over to your name. No plates yet! Tell them the car is not driveable at this time. DO NOT MENTION ANY THING ABOUT A KIT CAR!!!!!!! Once you get the title in your name and the car is ready for the road then get the plates. Then get your inspection.

Whats involved in the inspection?

Just a basic inspection. Brakes, lights, turn signals, tires, e-brake, but some shops may require windsheild wipers and seat belts since most are not use to inspecting 80+ year old vehicles.

you can get the title transferred in your name before the car is finished but if the title is from out of state, you will have to wait until the car is finished before you get the title in hand because Texas requires a green slip before they will completely registration and issue the actual title. You get the green slip from the inspector and it is turned in with the title paperwork.

It really depends on where you go as to what is required... I believe the only things that are required is 1 headlight, 1 taillight/brakelight, license plate light, horn(seat belts are not required)... if the car has a windshield then its required to have wipers...

What's everybody doing for wipers on these T-Buckets? I don't remember seeing any on the cars I've looked at.

This topic has been discussed before but I believe that any pictures that were posted were lost in the transition to the new Forum layout. That said, here is what I did for my car in order to pass the Safety 23 for the NSRA. It is a purely temporary set up only with a cigarette lighter receptacle under the dash.

The wiper motor, arm and blade were purchased from Speedway and the "clamp" was made from some aluminum scrap.

This is a subject I really don't like seeing coming up on car forums, buying a title is wrong and illegal in many states. Granted when I applied my state issued title (1968) it was a little easier to get but my bucket is legally registered and can be sold to anyone any where with a state of Illinois issued VIN as a 1923 Ford. I don't understand how a guy can spend all the time it takes to build a dream vehicle but can't take the time to properly register it. How would you feel if down the road the state confiscated your bucket for having an illegal/altered/bogus title? Let me take a WAG here, the government would be the bad guy, right?

Does it have to be a powered wiper?

So when I register Becky in TX, I'll have to add a horn, license plate light and remove the windshield. Or a hand wiper. :thumb:

Here is the page from the NSRA SAFETY 23 MANUAL.

As you can see, a manual wiper is NOT acceptable.

just depends on who does your inspection... they might care or they might not, Texas law only requires wipers if the windshield is present(go figure)... I didnt even have the windshield posts on when I got mine inspected...

I bought one of Speedway's manual clamp-on wipers just for the inspection, then took it off. I'd post a link to the product listing but Speedway's web site is down right now.

Thanks Dove, I'm moving to Huntsville, from Vegas. So I'm going to have to get all my vehicles ready for inspection.

I may have stated this earlier, elsewhere, but I just got my title 1923 Ford Roadster. Let me correct that, I got a tag.
I had a Tenn title, but the Ala courthouse did not need it. Also, here we are allowed to take a form and have law enforcement inspect the vehicle, which helps immensley.

The inspection part may be of some help.

But if your state insists that you need to get a safety inspection (which isn't a big deal) and an emissions test (which is not happening) then what else are you supposed to do? Move to a different state? That's not happening either. So your options are to let your dream car sit in your garage or sell it. Both are not happening. So looking for a title is your only option. YES! I'm blaming my government/state. There is no reason why a vehicle that is not driven everyday can't be registered as a street rod or pleasure vehicle and be expected to have the same regulations as a production vehicle period.
