Can I expect side to side movement from the radius rods?

Hello everyone,

I am getting close to starting the engine soon.

I have been working on headlight mounts.

I am working with SS 32 hi-boy style mounts.

Can I expect side to side movement from the radius rods?

And if so how much?

Are my mounts going to be a problem hitting the radius rods having only a 1/2 gap between them.

Thanks

If you have a front panhard bar you should not experience significant side-to-side movement of the radius rods. If you don't have a panhard, you could see considerable (relatively speaking) side-to-side movement as the axle swings on the spring shackles.

If you properly installed your front spring, " in tension" in other words w/ the frt. tires off the ground your shackles should be nearly horizontal, you should not have any appreciable side to side movement.

Hi Ted, so glad you saw this post.

The top of the post has a nice square bracket for the carriage bolt.

Different posts talk about this style post having a lot of bounce on a stock 32 frame.

My impression is that they are mounted on the stock 32 frame that looks like a C in shape.

With the boxed frame that I am working with some type of bracket would be needed.

Having a heavy L bracket welded around and on top then ground flat would work the best.

I tried to get the bolts as close to the inside of the L as possible.

I have been looking at making a flat plate and weld it on the top of the frame with the same idea.

I think I could gain another 1/4 inch maybe more.

I wouldn't think their would be to much moment BUT I'm really not 100% sure.

I have to say, I do like the way the lights look on the T in my mounted test.

Thanks

You could mount those on top of your frame rail using "riv-nuts". Mine have been installed that way for many miles, years w/ no problem .

OR, drill all the way through the tube frame, then drill it out larger so you can weld in a small tube for the bolt or bolts, to fit all the way through the frame, with lock nuts to the inside and or bottom, this way you can tighten all the bolts and not hurt/pinch/distort the frame...

Those posts are designed after a "28-'29 model A light bar. There's nothing wrong with the way you mounted them however if you cut out a plate to match the base of the post, tap some threads in it, weld it to the top of the frame rail, it'll look great. They do tend to vibrate a little. If this bothers you simply make up a bar to go from one headlight bucket stud to the other.
