Kaaso's T

Casey, I would do the steering first, and yes the Vega works under the frame with the pitman arm up, then the brakes, steering has to be where it has to be, but you can shuffle the brake pedal to where it fits your foot... BTDT :)

Thanks for the advice Ted... that makes sense.

Casey, The steering box I mount just under where the Corvair box mounts on top of the frame, use the box in stock form, cut the big teeth in the pitman arm with a hack saw so that it will fit anywhere on the shaft, pointing straight up at a standstill position... the mounting bolts point down, the plate fits to the top of the box, steering box mounts under the plate... If we could upload pics from our desktops directly, I would put a pic in to show you how it looks finished... :)

Ted, I would love to see those pics. If email is an option for you my email is casbaker@verizon.net.

Anyone else that has brake pedal or steering gear mounting pics I would love to see them. Please feel free to shoot me a pic or two.

Just wanted to say HI to everyone and give a quick update. I finally got all the pieces for the front suspension and everything is bolted together. I got the trans crossmember in. I went ahead and mocked everything back up to see where the rear end looks good at. Going to start on the rear suspension next. I want to see this thing as a roller!! Then will come steering and brakes.

Hi Casey, your car certainly looks trick and you and your brother and friends are making excellent progress. Keep at sir.

mmmmm ..... bubble wrap on the front end, the eternal question, to paint or to chrome, that is the question. Lookin' good. Was the length of the frame determined by the engine or guesstimate? Cad should be bout the same size as a BBC. Really like the turtle deck. Looking forward to seeing the roller.

John

Thanks guys...:tnku:

Onefingerjohn- The length of the frame was determined by the engine, body and turtle deck. The Cadillac is about 3 inches longer than a SBC (with a long waterpump), not sure about the length of a BBC. Sorry about the bubble wrap, I was just trying to protect that shiny axle. :D

Hey guys just wanted to jump on here and say HI to everyone. We have made some more progress on my project. I was able to pick up a set of well used tires and wheels off of CL to help with the mock ups. I have been working for the last several weeks on my rear suspension. Unfortunately due to lack of money, time and waiting on parts to be shipped it is taking me quite a while to finish it. The triangulated rear suspension is still a work in progress at this time. But I thought I would post some pics to show the progress I have made so far. Hopefully the last couple of pieces will come in this week and I can finish it up this weekend.

Is that a heater between the frame rails in picture no. 3 ? Looks like this isn't your first time at the rodeo. Fab work is neat, well thought out.

Good stuff. Its a pleasure to see the pics of your work.
Especially like the way you tacked the rear in with angle before you set up the radius rods. Cool. Just the same as I would do it (for what its worth). Sets all the measurement right before the final decisions are made.
Quick question for you. Are you going to put the front mounts for the bars in double shear or leave then in single as in the pic?
Gerry

I always use single shear for mounting my 4 bar bushings, so much easier to service that way... I do believe I would have given myself a bit more wench room and attached to more frame and rear housing material, longer/more welding area... can tear out easier with a short weld area... You will be rolling soon, then outside for side pics... :)

RPM- Thank you very much for the pic of the steering gear. I believe I am going to go with a cross steer rack. I really think they look cool and plus that solves my lack of space issues.

One finger John- yes that is a heater in the pic...hehehe! I cant stand laying on a cold floor or working when I am cold.

Gerry & Ted- The front mounts for the lower bars will be a single mount type. The front mounts for the upper bars will have a second piece added to the mount that will make it a double shear type. I could not put that second piece in place until I removed the temporary angle iron that is keeping the rear end in place. And I couldnt remove those until I finish the lower bars. Since those pics were taken, I have the lower bar brackets tacked on the rear end. Today I received the correct radius rod ends in the mail, so I can finish out the lower bars this weekend. Once those are done and in place, I will remove the angle iron and finish out the upper bar mounts.

Thanks again for all the compliments. Hopefully I will have more pics to share after this weekend.

Casey

Nice work Casey ... keep us posted on your progress.

Ron

With using a rack steering unit, if it is not mounted to the front axle, every time the chassis moves up and down the wheels will be turning both in or out at every dip in the road, with the short steering arms? :) Good luck, unless it rides like a buckboard/Indy car with no real movement?

Ted, I think what he's going to use is a" 1 -sided" R&P that only steers 1 side, similar to cross-steer . Still uses a tie rod

dave

Yes you are correct Dave..I am using a Unisteer cross-steer rack. i picked one up this past weekend. Once I get a chance to work on it I will post some pics.
Thanks for all the positive comments.
