My ProjecTee

I've been busy building a roof on Leroy's 29 model a sport coupe. I'm almost finished skinning the skeletal frame. I 've posted progress photos in the fiberglass section.

Several months ago i purchased a 327 engine from Leroy. He said it was rebuilt. It turns out it was rebuilt by his son- in- law & his son-in-law's father. So far i replaced all of the pushrods (after finding 2 bent ones). I also replaced all of the lifters. A bought a pair of aluminum heads from Skip White. A set of arp head bolts & some 1.6 aluminum rocker arms. I flipped the engine upside down to examine the rotation assembly. OMG !! ANOTHER SURPRISE !! I found a nightmare............there were odd & even numbered piston on both sides of the engine. YIKES!! On a small block chevy , the passenger's side of the engine has even numbered pistons (2 - 4 - 6 - 8) and on the drivers's side of the engine (1 - 3 - 5 - 7). I corrected that nightmare. I'm thinking about installing the oil pan and MOUNT the engine in my car. After the engine is mounted , then install the lifters , pushrods ,rocker arms , heads and intake manifold on the already mounted short block. Sound workable ?

Sorry for your troubles. Many have been where you are with shoddy work done on a supposedly 'rebuilt' engine. Will Leroy give you any satisfaction?

Leroy has provided his facilities to me for more than 5 years now. His tools , body shop and electricity. I am not required to pay for any of these. I owe him more than i can ever repay. I do errands for him as the need arises. I get car parts , i give customers a ride to thier homes , i deliver checks , i make bank deposits and i'm building his 29 model a sport coupe. I also do fiberglass repairs for his customers. I do all of these chores for free (gratis). Hope this helps you understand my unique situation. I am very blessed.

I've had alot of the engine apart already. When i removed the pistons , i checked the wrist pins , the rings , rod bearings. The pistons look like thev'e been balanced & they also have arp rod bolts installed. The cylinders have been bored to 30 thousandths, The piston are new. I installed a new oil pump. Thanks guys for your concern.

If it was balanced, was it assembled with the pistons in the order they were in because it was a balanced rotating assembly? If you decide to switch their positions, I would weigh each of them to See if they weigh the same. If not, run them as it was assembled. Without having any history from the builder, it’s hard to tell what the thought process was. I love 327’s.

I believe the pistons were balanced at B&R machine shop at the 2 amateur assemblers request. Then they were returned to the 2 amateur assemblers for assemblage. Leroy has used B&R machine for several years. With this acquired knowledge ; i believe the machine work is okay. I think the only problem my engine had , was CRAPPY ASSEMBLAGE.

I hope you're right, DR. The key then becomes to re-assemble things in the proper way in which they were balanced. The machine shop should have marked components according to which position in the block they belong. Keeping our fingers crossed . . . 🤞

Most machinists know their trade. Measuring and knowing proper assembly technique is equally important to get a bullet proof result. I have, however, received mis machined parts or mis marked parts from very established machine shops. No one is perfect. Hopefully you are good and it’s all in order. A balanced 327 with forged internals ought to be a buzz saw! One of my favorite engines. If only we still had affordable fuel to support them as they were designed to run.

Hi Spanky ; all of the pistons were numbered & the new pistons which are 30 over have an arrow pointing to the front of the engine.

Great! I figured that would be true since you said the shop who did the work has a good reputation. I, too, am a fan of 327's. There's nothing quite like the sound they make when wound up in 1st gear. . . 😁

I owned a 1967 Camaro RS THAT HAD A 327 AND A 1972 V8 Vega that also had a 327. I've also had a 1974 V8 Luv truck with a 350 and a 1977 Triumph TR7 V8 that had a 350. I prefer the 327.

I made a front air dam for my track tee nose. I'll post photos. I'm also going to make a fan shroud for my new radiator. I now have a complete engine installed. the past photos are of a bare block mounted in my frame.

Here's the photos i promised. My front air dam , my complete engine (installed) , my radiator & my front shocks (installed).
