Tapping front axle

Anyone see a problem with drilling and tapping a 1/4" x 20 hole in a front tube axle?? I need to mount some bump stops for my tie rod arms to keep the tire from hitting the drag link. Chief T

There is usually a long nut on the pin that holds the king pin in that limits the turn of the spindle. Is that there? That would be more posative and less stress on the tie rod.

A stop on the spindle would be better but i don't see why that wouldn't work Chief.

Thanks for the input.

My king pins are held in by set screws not pins and I didn't see any way to put a stop on the spindle, so I'll just try the 1/4' hole in the axle.

Just measure up and put a longer set screw in to hold the king pin, long enough that the spindle hits it to limit travel. Or you can use a grub screw and put a barrel nut on top.

Yes you could use a longer set screw, if it is in the right place to work as a stop, then put a dome nut (for the bump stop) on it to both protect it and lock it (the set screw) in as well... otherwise, I have seem many people mount many different things to a front axle... a .250 = 1/4" wall axle... Why do you not put a slite bend in your drag link to give clearance for the tire, let it turn a lot sharper..? :D

What do you consider a sharp turn?? The tires now turn 37* before the tire touches the drag link.

Ask your self this ...can i make a right turn from a stop sign? If the answer is yes then move on to the next problem.
