Putting togehter my steering shaft

I'm putting together my steering shaft and u-joints this week. I will have a short piece of 3/4" round stock between both u-joints(1"DD to 3/4" round u-joint--short piece of 3/4 round stock then a 3/4" round to 5/8" by 36 spline u-joint). I want to drill through the round stock and use a roll pin. Can anyone recommend a size? I'm thinking 1/8" or 3/16"?????

How long is the "short" piece of 3/4 round. Why not use a 1"dd to a 5/8-36 u joint?
