cleaning threads

I am trying to get all the metal shavings out of my radius arms from being drilled for 5/8-18 threads. I can't seem to find a thread chaser for that size. Would spraying
wd-40 up in there be a good way to remove filings up the the arms?

What Ted said! Ha!!!

Well you may already have cutting fluid inside the tube from drilling, so if you have compressed air, I use a length (18")of 3/16 brake line attached to an air blower, with it shoved up into the tube then hit the trigger and that should clean out most all of the shavings... I thought about the left hand tap, you will have to find a real good supply house for that maybe... Good luck with your project...

McMaster-Carr has everything, LOL.

Left hand 5/8 18 tap from Speedway ...28 bucks. P# 912-81036LH ... Right hand tap at local farm store 7 bucks. Just bought a new set ... LOL

I can't seem to find a thread chaser for that size??? What did you use to make the threads? All of the comments above work. I would spray WD-40, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, air, nothing else use an old toothbrush.

I find your inqiuiry a bit confusing;

"I am trying to get all the metal shavings out of my radius arms from being drilled for 5/8-18 threads. I can't seem to find a thread chaser for that size. Would spraying

You say ..."after being drilled for 5/8-18 threads". Then you say can't find a thread chaser. Has the item ben drilled and tapped or just drilled?

If only drilled, don't worry about fillings until threaded. If not tapped and you are in need of a tap, other posts responnd.

By the way, I've found the best way to hold the tube while threading is to chuck it up in a lathe with at least a three jaw chuck, It is difficult to hold the tube in a vise unless it's a hairpin to resist turning.

Once tapped, the consider cleaning out the filings. I like the idea of the long tube and comprsssed air.

I used the long handled brush I used to clean out my engine block oil galleries-also a rifle cleaning brush will work.

Also try Grainger, Enco, and Fastenal. Anyplace where they sell machine shop tools you can get any tap made. Let me also say this, when you tap, you go thry the hole the first time heavily cutting threads, I normally use tapmagic or some type of heavy cutting oil. Usually the 2nd pass into the same hole with another tap, (ususally the next smaller tap size....usually a H-2 instead of a H-3)as not to overly enlarge the threads but to 'clean' the threads out, but I normally on the 2nd pass us a tapping wax, its thick and sticky, as the H-2 Cleans, the 'giblets' that are cut out and off will stick to the tap, and be cleaned off.

All taps made are made with these designations, H1-H5. H1 being the smallest and H5 being the largest. When you drill out a hole and normally tap it....your getting a H3. You can adjust your thread 'Fit' by using these to make your threaded fit tighter or looser.

Be sure to clean off your taps but leave them oiled, and don't let them bump around, just like your files....
