Northstar T is taking shape

This thing may actually be a hot rod some day.

And the most accurate representation of the color I've managed to photograph yet. this is very very close to the real deal.

Got er all wired up today and running again..... well sorta. the fuel presure regulator seems to be stuck and making it run WAY rich. I gassed myself right out of the shop when I fired it up today. sure sounds mean however

Always forward but never straight,
Russ

Looking very good. Rear tires are spot on (even if you have to cut a little from your doorway to get it out). Bet the glitches you have will all be sorted by the time you read this.
That engine looks awesome just sitting there looking innocent (yeh right). You ll be finished in no time
Gerry

Ha ha. I did measure the door after Youngster mentioned that a couple months ago. :pfff: has 4" to spare .

Heres one for you Russ

I made the rear end of mine to the Garage door width less 2". I would have like another 4" or so on the rear width but then where would I keep the T?. We have mostly brick built garages so making it bigger is a big deal.
Gerry

Lets' see now, for Russ 4 in. is 2 in. per side which is this amount of clearance per side I........................................I

For Gerry, who has proudly announced that his palatial 1000 year old estates' brick garage can not be altered except for an act of GOD and who says that his rear track is LESS than 2 in, thats' 1 in. clearance per side which is this amount I....................I And that is being generous.

All I gotta say is have a "skinny" pair of rear tires handy for the old in & out. Some how I know you guys wouldn't have it any other way.

Send video of the first roll out w/the big ones on, John

I plan to limit my "burn outs out of the garage" exits with my T. I've pushed it outside a couple times already, and will likely continue to use that approach even after it's drivable. my garage is made of wood and could be altererd by hammer or by rubber and steel.
I got my rich running repaired today after work BTW. it was the regulator as I suspected. it was enlightening however, as I never realised just how big of difference one could make on fuel ratio by fuel presure alone. I can tune with laptop, but for those that haven't done that before I can tell you that it's quite time consuming to change each "cell" in the fuel map. I may have to look into an adjustable presure regulator as a tuning aid  .

I seem to sense a little sarcasm in there somewhere

Russ
Told you it would be fixed by the time I you posted agin.

Gerry, I have to admit that there is a bit of sarcasm tinged with a touch of jealousy. A decent garage here in Los Angeles is going to set you back $200.00 a month. Most are used for storage and landlords recoil at the thought of mechanical work being done in their garages. If the build takes a year, then throw an additional $2400.00 just for a roof over the project. Think what could be purchased and how much further along the project could be with that money. I see photos of clean, neat garages here and I start to whimper a bit. I just have to man up and earn the extra money. Not getting any younger.

John

I'm hoping to stick up some 2X4s up against my house and cover them with tarps to give me a little shelter for the winter for working on my project.....

I took Jennifer on the Ts maiden voyage yesterday. two full laps around our circle driveway  . can you say "power to weight ratio". even had Jennifer doing "yippies" and laughing like a school girl..... and that was only 1/3 throttle.

The glass should be ready on Tuesday, so I got the frame mounting ready to go and the support rods fabricated. I decided to change the injector stacks a wile back and finally actually did that yesterday also. I don't know that it looks any better or worse, but I feel much more comfortable knowing that "foreign objects" won't be finding their way down the stacks wile at a show, or parked along the streets. it should keep the general dust and dirt out when parked at home as well, I recon'. I'll have my buddy with a muffler shop bell the tips for me, and then I have a trick finish in mind for them as well.

The door got mounted, brakes bled and adjusted, anti-freeze installed, and other various fluids checked. I found a suitable third brake light and installed it as well, so that means all wiring is done.

There's a local car show that I'd like to take this car to on the 18th, but soon after that I expect to hit the upholstery shop. that's one item I still feel I have to farm out.

Cheerio,

Oh, but what does it sound like? Please, if you can, a video with sound. By the way, how many miles is your driveway? Indianapolis 2.5 miles or a Milwaukee Mile mile? Any air filtration? Perhaps a set of K&Ns, Weber style. Neat car. Green is looking very regal. Could be black from last pic.

My old digi camera is about 10 years old and just doesn't do loud sounds justice. I'll see what I can do fer ya however. driveway is only 400 feet or so per lap. no air filtration is currently planned, other than screens at the base of the stacks. If I planned to put some real miles on the car I might fab up a base plate on the current stacks and install an elongated filter on each bank. this setup would lend itself to that actually.

BTW [Ted  ] , here's a pic of the pedals with my size 13s planted on them. I'm happy to report that it's a very natural feeling arrangement, and I even found that heal/toe manipulation was very easy to do. I'll glue carpet dirrrectly to the kick panel area to save space there, but there's plenty of room to park my left foot under the pedal for cruising.

Well... now John has me thinking again, and as Radar once told Colonel Potter, "I try not to sir... it slows down the work". I did some research on air filter dimentions, and the oval air filter from an 80" Nissan 280ZX would be just the perfect size to use on each bank of stacks, so I guess I ain't done yet.

Does K&N or the other filter manufacturers have either individual pod filters or the paired Weber type or even the sprint car type for Enderle or Kinser F.I. units?

Yooooooooooo Russ, Well you are jamming right along and looking great! Could be a Big Brother to mine.. hehe If your foot fits under the clutch pedal, that works for you and also for me... Too bad the round top windshield frames are so hard to find at a good price... As far as air filters go, I used heavy screen down in the bottom of mine, found a penny in there once... there has always got to be at least one A hole out there... Drive easy for a while, it will be like breaking in a wild NASTY bull... or riding on a rocket, and that takes a bit of getting used to... BTDT :)

Not hard for me to find. I have an original round top windshield frame in my garage right now. it's wider than my body however, so I decided to build a new frame rather than cut up an original one in good condition. It even had safety glass in it when I got it, but I did give away the top portion of glass to a visiting buckethead a couple weeks ago that had cracked his. I also figured the square frame top would be easier to fit a soft top to, if the mood strikes. I'll make you a heck of a deal on the remaining round top parts however  .

I hear ya on the A hole parade. a buddiy of mine built a gourgeous black model a truck street rod. wile at a show someone walking by stuck a piece of gum on the door. ya gota love em [or eliminate tham from the gene pool].

Believe me, the first few trips in the new ride will be very easy ones with an ear towards every creek and groan. then progressing to more demanding "tests". It always takes me a long time to get really comfortable driving a new build. [did I tighten that bolt???? is that weld really "good enough"? etc etc.... you know what I mean.

shiny side up,
Russ

I'm pretty sure K&N would have all of the above styles, but my idea is better this time. [grin]. I don't know the name of the post, but do you remember the recent T post with the pics of the slant top windshield and covered engine? it had very similar air filters on it to what I envision for mine.

Russ

Well done Russ!

You will need air filters as the angle of your intake pipes is perfect for sucking stuff thrown off the front tires during a turn.

K&N makes individual filters as used in 4 cyl. bikes. You can find'em on eBay. It'll run a tad richer with filters.... I'm thinking you don't have an ECU which would sense that and correct by O2 reading.

Thanks ORF.
I'm using a Holly Commander ECU on this motor. It's not my favorite for running the Northstar, but I had it already, so I'll use it. It does adjust itself for such things via the 02 sensor + I can hook up the laptop and tweek as needed also. I'll run a wide band 02 when I get down to the serious tuning.

The paper pattern was cut using the dimensions of the filters I plan to use (280ZX Nissan) . I'll hammer out a base plate and cover for each of them, weld the base plate to the tubes in about the location of my pattern in the pic, and install studs for the cover. I shortened the tubes where they sit on the throttle bodies by about an inch today, as I won't be needing that space to install the screen setups I was going to use, and I think they look better shorter anyway. the tube end inside the filter will have a flare installed to aid intake air flow.

Most of my day was actually consumed by cleaning up the shop, but I did get a lot a engineering work done in the white room (between my ears), so next weekend should be fun.

Cheerio,

Russ
