Mykk's BMW V8 T-bucket, version 1.5:

Yes,I had a 'wing' from a late model car and had to set it on the bed "just to see".
That lasted about 2 minutes for me.
I agree that open wheel, engine and suspension out in the air, vertical radiator and windshield, but with an aero device looks like bolt-on for the sake of having more stuff. There was that one T that had a wing that looked fantastic, though.

Getting this differential together really has been by the skin of my teeth. The rear facing wilwoods really is such a major aesthetic for the rear end, especially with the differential out in the open hanging off a perch. It's been a pain getting this oversized wilwoods to fit.

However, the low profile finned aluminum diff cover has been clearanced for the calipers. It is Right Stuffed & bolt onto the diff.

I do wish I had some more slide clearance on the left caliper between the banjo bolt and fin. I do fear if I grind any more away I'll grind a hole into the cover. Which wouldn't be an issue if I had a TIG, granted TIG on cast can be a chasing game.

The right side is ok:

It rolled out of the shop supporting it's own weight today. Which feels like a milestone despite that everything is loosely bolted together in a state of mock-up.

Admittedly the rear leaf spring doesn't have enough gusto to support the car. But I have a plan.... For now the jack helped bring the rear end up to desired ride height.

Getting started on the engine work:

Degreaser and pressure washer for the initial rough cleaning. The engine on the left is the 4.4L engine, the one on the right is the 4.0L with the bigger cams desirable double row timing chains.

The 4.4L had a much better maintained life compared to the 4.0L. Luckily the 4.4 long block will be used for the build.

My 1/2" impact gun doesn't have enough oomph to break the crank bolts loose on the engines. They are notoriously over-tight from the factory. Thankfully a shop here in town is willing to break them loose for me with a 1" impact on 180psi

Hours & hours of cleaning, degreasing, scrubbing, wire brushes. Chemical cleaners, brakleen, aircraft stripper & pressure washing. Not even half way done.

Ugh! The only bright spot . . . it's probably only a one-time job. ;) My little SB Chevy project doesn't come close, but . . . it was still nasty at the quarter car wash 😝

Spanky, your reference to the “quarter car wash” brought back a lot of memories. In the 60’s that’s what we called it. I grew up in Chicago in the 60’s and that was how we referenced it. If you were quick you could get it done for a quarter! Maybe 2 quarters of the car was extra dirty. I used one this past winter. My car was filthy. Snow, salt and all that crap! I’m now living in Wisconsin and there’s a “quarter car wash” in town. I thought I’d give it a try. No quarters anymore. Now you insert your credit card. It cost me $9.00 for a quarter car wash! It’s not as much fun when you’re in your in your 70’s as it was when you were 18! You’re cold, soaking wet, cold hands and in a hurry to get done.
Oh, to be 18 again!

Cleaning, Cleaning, Cleaning

I often get asked why do I like to use such obscure drivetrains in these buckets:

Four bolt splayed mains
Piston cooling oil squirters
Cracked rod caps
WIndage Tray
DOHC
Dual Row Timing chains
Full aluminum drivetrain

.... It's all the stuff I read about in Hot Rod and Engine Builder magazines growing up. All stuff that sounded like prohibitively expensive unobtainable dreams, and it comes like that from the factory in these engines.
