"Black Dahlia"

A friend came through with a pair of temporary spares in the bolt pattern I needed. One has a slow leak at the rim, but free, is free. Couldn't say no. A quick coat of paint and on they went. This set up is 21" and the ones I'll end up using are 26". This will make it a lot easier to move around.

Any plans to pinstripe the insides of the holes in the shock/headlight mounts in red like the axle? Looking good so far!

Today, I've decided to get a pair of wheels and tires from the salvage yard in order to have a roller. The original plan was to wait until I had saved enough money to get the finished wheels I had been looking at. My thoughts now, are that having a rolling chassis at this junction would be a good idea. Being able to roll the chassis around will be a lot easier. So, on my day off, I'll start searching for a set. The average here, at a junk yard is $40-$50. I'll try and beat that. Wish me good hunting.

Find someone who scraps and they will likely give them to you. They deduct about 40.00 per car if they have wheels on them around here, and a complete car only nets about 150. acrossed the scales right now.

That's an idea. I'll keep it in mind, when I go looking.

No luck on the steel rims, so I'll be getting the Cragars. Hopefully, next week. I went to 7 yards and all they had were the aluminum wheels, which were so close to the cost of the Cradars, the decision was easy. Around here, it seems they crush the steel ones or use them to support junk cars for parts picking. sigh.......

Memorial Day and I spent the morning at work. It was okay, time and a half will help me buy stuff. But in those hours, I was thinking about the wheels I have chosen for my build. Then.... I had a moment of clarity. It was so clear, that the whole "theme" of my build will change. Nothing drastic. Just a new, more thought out path.

More later. Maybe.

Fred . . . you're keeping us in suspense!!! Looking forward to the new wrinkle. :D

Not intended. I'm gathering pics.

Best I could find, for now.

I'd have a chopped windshield and a more streetable engine with lake pipes. But it's the wheels and tires that are the focus and influence on this build.

Piece by piece. Center caps arrived today. Wow, that pic is big!

Next.... Bullet lug nuts.:)

I always thought the baby moons and beauty ring combo was a good look. I'm not a fan of white walls personally, but everyone has their personal taste. I like the bullet thing also. My machinist buddy is having their lathe guy make up a batch for me in between runs. I want to use them on my door hinge pins, etc...

I liked them because it was a simple look and the price was right. This time around, I plan on bullet caps and lug nuts, but I'm on the fence as far as beauty rings go. The thing with beauty rings, is once installed, they scratch the coating on the wheel, so there's no turning back without repairing the wheel coating. I was going to go with Spider caps, but cost didn't make sense and I also kept reading that they had a tendency to come loose and rattle.

This photo of my old build is to remind me to keep things simple. IMO, Hot Rods don't look right with WWW's. Plus, the cost is just plain stupid.

For what it's worth, my personal opinion is that there should be a visible break between the rim and the tire. It can be a contrasting lighter color, a chrome trim ring or, yes, even a white wall on an appropriate car. This new trend of black rims with black wall tires does not appeal to me in the least. They remind me of someone that does not clean his car regularly and has a heavy accumulation of brake dust on the wheels. IMHO I also know what they say about personal opinions,"they're like a--holes, they stink."

Agree entirely with that statement Ex Junk, a lot of the new cars down here in Aus are coming out with the blacked out rims now and they look like crap! I personally like a chrome rim with a satin black centre and chrome wheel nuts, but it's almost impossible to get good chrome these days.
Regards,
Mike.

I wasn't in any way trying to disrespect anyone's taste, i.e. Whitewalls... I just got burnt out on them, they look ok on some cars, but were overused, imho. I grew up seeing them on everything... Funny, I don't dislike white letters as much, but I prefer black wall tires. I concur with the break between the rubber and wheel if it's black. And for the chrome, it's rediculous how much it costs and how bad it's become. Don't even get me started on lug nuts... stupid ss covers that fall off, or if they are actually chrome, they rust or peel in a year. The steel ones with ss covers rust under the ss, and it expands them to a non standard size and they are difficult to remove without damaging something. They aren't metric or sae, you either have a socket that's too loose, or you have to drive it on...and if someone got over jealous with a lug wrench or impact, your doomed. I just battled them on my daughters Jeep... I think twelve out of twenty were damaged in this way.
