Keepers build

Small update for today. I picked up the glass last night, figured I would see how it looked. Amazing what a windshield will do to the looks :)

Once that was done I started on remaking my dash in steel, did not get to far along there before the dogs started bugging me for a walk:

I have been doing work on a dash, as the last big project of the build. I thought I had it finished, but once again in my quest to make everything about this build difficult, I succeeded...here we go:

I started off with the "plate" its made of 12 gauge steel should be thick enough to allow me to mount things to it without it distorting anything.

I am not a fan of the gauges being in the middle of the dash (thats where the radio goes!!) so I had the idea of making a "pod" everything was going great:

Then I stripped apart to add the pod and paint, here is how it looked:

Then I realized I had forgot about the plastic piece used to hold the gauges to the dash. Those two bulky pieces made it impossible to fit the gauges in the the pod I created.....

Well before I attempted to add the gauges, thinking that everything was great, I stripped it back down, as I wanted a padded dash:

So after finding out that things did not quite work out as planned, I am back to the padded dash and gauge cluster, I need to make a new 'pod', but thats going to wait until winter....I am making a gas pedal and driving this thing a few times before the weather gets me!!

Here is how it sits now:

The plan is, a radio in the center, yup I want a radio, not a new cd/dvd player one, but an older two knob stereo. On the right side I will have an emblem of some sort, I have an idea of what I want but I haven't found the right one just yet.

I like it, Keeper. You're taking a cool approach to a section that is usually done one way. I can tell you want to get out and put some miles on before the winter.

Looks great but how about adding some embroidery to your dash.

This type of HOMEMADE build is what T-buckets is all about. Be Proud my friend. You've earned it!!!

Ah today was a great day. Yesterday I finished up the gas pedal and took my wife for a ride, which she thoroughly enjoyed :D

So today I had to address a couple small things left.

I needed a overflow bottle, so a trip to Canadian tire landed me a nice stainless steel bottle, for a whopping $3.39 (on clearance) some stainless braided water line and I have a bottle:

Next up was a mirror, I tried a couple rearview mirrors, but with such a small windshield they all looked bulky. So I went with a side mirror. I bought a standard "Door mount" side mirror (once again CT) but they are not really designed for cars with straight doors, so I was sort of stuck. Then I started looking at different ways to mount the mirror with out the crappy plastic mount that came with it. I decided to mount it directly to the windshield post, since I made the posts I knew the back plate was 3/16 so I drilled and tapped the post. Works great and you hardly notice it:

I am now planning on doing the same the the drivers side.

Next up was the rad supports. The placement of these took me a while to determine. I used some stainless rods I had taken out of an old hospital cart that I scraped, I threaded the ends and made some "clevises" out of 5/16 threaded rod connectors. I do not like the way most of these mount slanted to down in the back, so I played with it until I found the look I wanted:

Then I rolled it out for some pics:

Then of course if you have to fire it up to pull it back in the garage, might a well take it for a spin :D

This is my step daughter, her grin was just as big as mine!!

Man this thing is fun :D

Only thing I need now is my license plate lights, oh and a VIN plate, and I can get my plates.

Congats Keeper!!

One sugestion, when you mount some thing in that awesome dash, cut the objects shape out of the padding maybe 1/4" larger or so per side. Use a hair dryer the heat up the vynil as your tighten the piece. It might give you a more defined look. Try it first with some scrap materal.

Great job on the morror. Very slick!!

Thanks I will give that a shot.

I had issues with the vinyl bunching under the bolts. It became a battle of tightening a bit, loosening to get the wrinkles out then trying again.

Cutting a plastic washer just smaller than your bolt will keep the bolt head from grabbing the material. I used the side of a kitty litter jug. A milk jug would probably work too.

Sweet, looks good Keeper. Ain't the first drive great?

No plans as of now for a shroud, though that may change.

Yes they are the a blast, well at least around the block :) Should have the plates in the next week or so.

But there is always a catch.

I was working on doing an alignment adjusting the caster that was set at 12 degrees!!! When I noticed a small leak from the banjo fitting on the caliper, so I tightened up the fitting 1/8 a turn....and snapped the damn banjo bolt off in the caliper. It seems the copper crush washer was stronger then the banjo bolt. Man I love crappy parts.

Great job, Keeper! I smiled when you wrote about giving the ladies a ride. When I took my exgirlfriend for a ride, she said everytime we stopped at a light, it felt like she was naked because of the looks from other cars!!!

Welcome to the world of non-low profile motoring!!
